Types of Surgical Scissors
Although you will find many sizes and shapes of surgical scissors, each bearing the name of a famous surgeon, there are basically two types: those with straight blades and those with curved blades.
Surgical scissors with curved blades offer directional mobility, visibility and the means to cut tissue in a smooth curve easily. The 15-20 degree range of motion and visibility of structures over that found with straight surgical scissors. Curved surgical scissors are extremely useful deep in a wound where horizontal cutting with good visibility is desired. Straight surgical scissors have a mechanical advantage for cutting tough tissue. In some situations, straight surgical scissors can provide a more precise straight cut than the curved ones. Curved scissors have 30 to 40 degree more mobility and visibility than straight ones.
A variety of bone cutters are essentially surgical scissors for specialized purposes. Because of the resistance that bone offers to cutting, with the surgical instruments a palmed grip, sometimes with two hands, is needed instead of the finger grip used with other surgical scissors. The jaws of bone-cutting medical tools close more or less abruptly under great tension as the bone fragments separate. The tips of the blades, therefore, should be clear of any structure you do not desire to include in the cut. For example, while using rib cutters it is customary to point the shears perpendicular to the chest wall with the open blades beside rather than aimed toward the intercostals bundle. After starting a bite into the bone with rongeurs, kerrisons or other cutters, all tensions directed into the wound is relaxed, so that the surgical instrument will not slip deeper as the bite is completed. Security is thus gained when the only tension on the tissue is between the jaws of the surgical instruments.

Surgical Scissors
Surgical Scissors
Surgical scissors are excellent surgical instruments for disection & for blunt dissection. Most scissors are designed for use with the right-handed grip that enables direction control and precision of cuts. The thumb-ring finger grip provides the greatest stability in direction control & gives maximal closing, torque and shear power using your natural grip movement of your right hand.
You could find various different types of surgical scissors like there shapes and sizes, each having the name of a famous surgeon, there are two types for this: those with straight blades and those with curved blades.
The surgical scissors with the best mobility have curved blades, visibility and the means to cut tissue in a smooth curve easily. The 15-20 degree scale of motion and visibility of structures over that found with straight surgical scissors. Curved surgical scissors are extremely useful deep in a wound where horizontal cutting with good visibility is best. Straight surgical scissors have a mechanical advantage for cutting tough tissue. In certain cases, straight surgical scissors give additional of an accurate cut as contrast to the curved ones. Curved surgical scissors have 30 to 40 degree more mobility & visibility than straight ones.
A range of bone cutters are fundamentally surgical scissors for specific purposes. This is due to the counter-efforts that bone does for cutting, a plamed grip with surgical instruments, in certain sitiutions with both hands, is neccessary as oppossed to the finger grip which is used with other surgical scissors. When the bone fragments seperate. The jaws of the bone cutting medical tools close & easier with more tension. The tips of the blades, thus, should be clear of any structure you do not desire to include in the cut. For example, while using rib cutters it is proper to point the shears perpendicular to the chest wall with the open blades beside rather than aimed toward the intercostals bundle. After you begin a bite using the bone rongeurs, kerrisons or any other type of cutters, all tensions directed into the wound is relaxed, so that the surgical instrument will not slip deeper as the bite is accomplished. When the only tension on the tissue is between the jaws of the surgical instruments, security is then gained.
Surgical scissors can cut flaccid tissue effectively because the tissue is stabilized between the scissor blades. When surgical scissors slice, they give force, shear & torque to produce a precise cut. When you push cut you give a more smooth cut along the surface. "chewing it" happens when you jagged & crusehd wound stuck between the blades of surgical scissors lacking in slicing force.
When your cutting sutures with your scissor tip, search for the knot in between the slightly spread blades, rather than under the surgical scissors. Use the left hand, the patient's body, or some other structure thats stable as a fulcrum to steady the scissors when making fragile cuts or when held by antoher person cutting sutures. When your cutting a row of sutures, place the structure in your left hand so that each one becomes taut as you cut it & they do this so that the cut sutures are held out of the way.
By seperating the scissors while inside the tissue planes, blunt dissection can be done or by doing a probe or rake by using surgical scissors. Blind dissection is occasionally useful between tissue planes away from vital structures. Curved surgical scissors offer greater maneuverability and visibility, whereas straight surgical scissors provide the greatest mechanical benefit when cutting tough, thick tissue.
