Types of Blades Posted on April 26, 2012 The majority surgical scissors are shaped with differnt blade definitions this all depends on the particular surgical practise being done by the doctor. the 3 varouse types of blades are the following. Stainless Blades – The most common is the surgical scissors with stainless steel blades. The entire scissor is manufactured out of the exact same metal (stainless steel) and you should notice any ring colors. Tungsten Carbide Blades – Inserted only along the cutting surfaces of the blade is the metal tungsten carbide (A.K.A TC). These metal strips are much harder than stainless steel. When sharpened, this type of surgical scissor blades stay more sharp for a longer period of time and are attached to the stainless scissor by welding or vacuum brazing. These T.C. insert strips cannot be replaced once they become sharpened down. Tungsten carbide surgical scissors have gold rings to distinguish this design. Black Handled Surgical scissors – These surgical scissors are known as micro grind or super cut surgical scissors in the industry. The sharpening practice that is used to make these medical instruments is what makes it truly unique. This scissor will “knife” through whatever you will bring to it. All other surgical scissors crush, resulting in cutting, whereas the black handled scissor slices tissue. Black handled surgical scissors require special sharpening techniques using special medical equipment and must be re-sharpened three to four times a year. The unique features of these surgical scissors are the black colored rings. Gold Handled surgical scissors have cutting blades made of tungsten carbide. Becuase its rough and more harder, TC stay sharper longer. Inspect TC blades for cracks before tray assembly. If you see a crack, then send it back right away so the manufacture can replace it with the warranty.

There are so many different kinds that when you are starting out it can be quite confusing choosing the right type. Using the right tool for the right job can really improve your jewellery making whilst cutting down on the time it takes to create your jewellery item in the process. The different plier types may look similar when you are starting out but you’ll soon find that they all have their own unique characteristics. There are 4 basic types of pliers that are the most commonly used tools for jewellery making and these are side cutters, round nosed pliers, chain nosed pliers and flat nose pliers.Side Cutters Side cutters have sharp jaws that can come in a variety of shapes; these are used for cutting soft wires, threads or metal sheets. The shape of the cutters affect how the cut face will appear; general side cutters will leave the cut edge smooth and even. Round Nosed Pliers Round nose pliers have rounded jaws and are used to hold, shape and bend jewellery wire. They are used for creating loops, curves, circles and coils and are essential when making such items as earrings and adding bead charms to a bracelet amongst other things. The jaws of the pliers are tapered so this enables you to make a variety of different sized loops and gives a very professional finish to you jewellery. They can be purchased individually or as part of a set. Chain Nosed Pliers These are essential in any jewellery maker’s toolbox and are used for almost all aspects of jewellery making. They can be used for bending, holding, turning the wire and also opening and closing jump rings and crimping. Their small ends enable them to get into small spaces and grip the jewellery well. Flat Nosed Pliers Flat nose pliers have a slim flat service. They can be used for bending wire and also straightening any bends or kinks out of the wire. They can also be used for opening and closing jump rings and also for crimping crimp beads. Specialist Pliers Crimping Pliers Crimping pliers are used to crush a metal crimp onto the wire to hold a bead or clasp into place. Although a chain nose pliers can be used for this a crimping pliers gives a much neater finish to you jewellery. Round Nose Rosary Pliers Rosary pliers are a combination of round nose pliers and side cutters. The round nose is used for making loops and curves and the side cutter is used for cutting wire or cord. Plier’s Construction Box Joint Versus Lap Joint Pliers Most pliers are constructed with either box joints or lap joints to hinge and fasten the two halves of the pliers together. You will usually find that lesser quality budget pliers use a lap joint because their cheaper and easier to manufacture. Box joint pliers will always outlast and outperform lap joint pliers and are therefore a far superior type of pliers to choose for your jewellery making. Box joint pliers should retain precise alignment and experience no looseness or side play always open and close smoothly due to their joint construction. Lap joint pliers on the other hand tend to wear very quickly which will result in the pliers becoming loose and wobbly over time. Spring Tension Pliers When you close your pliers to pick something up or snip some wire with your cutters, if your pliers aren’t spring loaded they will stay shut once you release the tension. Some pliers have a single or double spring others have no spring at all to keep the jaws apart which means that you manually have to open and close the pliers. It’s worthy getting pliers with a single or double spring if you can afford them as they will help your hands from tiring so easily. Material Pliers are generally either made of stainless steel or hardened and tempered carbon steel. Stainless steel pliers have the benefit of never rusting, will have a good life span but aren’t as hard wearing as hardened steel, so will wear over time. Hardened and tempered carbon steel pliers are extremely tough and hard wearing but they do have a tendency to rust, so need to be oiled regularly. Handles Pliers can come with a range of handles including foam grip, PVC and ergonomically designed handles. A PVC grip is generally harder wearing than a foam grip but not as comfortable to use for long periods of time. Ergonomically designed pliers will cost more but if you’re doing repetitive work for long periods its well worth investing in a pair as they are more comfortable to use and less fatiguing. Size Pliers come in sizes ranging from miniature to Heavy Weight; miniature pliers are great for travelling with or occasional use, but not really suitable for prolonged use. Most jewellery making tasks can be successfully accomplished with light weight or medium weight pliers. Heavy weight pliers as the name suggests are more suitable for heavy duty work and are suitable for working with memory wire.
Quality of Pliers Posted on April 28, 2012 Most pliers are constructed in one of two ways; Overlap (or Lap joint) construction and Box construction. Lap Joint The cheapest are so-called ‘lap joint’. The two pieces are simply ‘over lapped’ and held in place by a riveted joint through the centre of the overlap. Over time, the lap joint will wear and the faces or edges will move about slightly, With some very cheap tools, this can happen very quickly – sometimes after just a few operations. This is most noticeable with Round Nosed pliers when you are trying to bend wire at the extreme of the tips – you may find the tips bend sideways! There are a couple of exceptions to the ‘Overlap’ construction rule. Most Lindstrom Pliers are Overlap – but they are made with a highly specified screw joint (not rivet) of an extra-hard metal. ‘Beadstrom’ – made by Beadalon (note the play on the name!) are also Overlap construction with an allen key joint which can be tightened when the Tool wears – this is a great way to get precision at a good price. Box Joint These tools are machined so that one side of the tool passes through (as opposed to under or over) the other, therefore there are 4 faces in contact with each other rather than the 2 in lap jointed construction. As a result, the two sides cannot move about as much and wear affecting movement of the two pieces is reduced. Basically this means they are more accurate in use for a longer period of time! Size of Handles There is a growing amount of small hadled pliers on the market – beware of the picture you see – you need to ensure they are long enough to fit your hand! We sell a range with Handles as small as 3.5″ long – which are good for Children or those with small hands. BUT – an important thing to remember – the longer the handle the greater the leverage. So, you need less effort to grip things with longer handled tools which makes them more comfortable in use. Our Beadstrom Tools do have longer handles and have soft foam handles.The Lindstrom ‘RX’ range also have nice long handles. The important thing is, if you can, get to try the Pliers in a shop (or at one of the many Beadfairs we attend) Chain Nosed Pliers No idea why they are called Chain Nose – but you may also hear them referred to as ‘Snipe Nose’ which tend to be a little smaller in size. Make sure you purchase a pair that have smooth faces. Those available from most hardware shops have serrated faces which will mark your Jewellery! With their slightly pointed ends, these pliers are great for grabbing small items and for handling findings such as Jump Rings. Chain nosed Pliers are ideal for flattening crimps and getting into tight corners to close crimps or bend wire. Cutters As a secondary piece of information – and a very useful tip – buy a proper Bead Mat. Not only do they stop your beads from rolling around, when you are cutting wire, make sure the end to be cut is facing into – or touching – the Bead mat. This helps catch the cut wire without it flying over the room. (Having used one for the first time at our Bead Workshops, virtually everyone buys a Bead Mat before they leave!) Cutter are perhaps the most demanding of tools to make well – and you will likely find yourself buying a range of different cutters for different tasks. Two types of Cutter are available; Flush cutting and triangular or ‘V’ shaped edges. Flush cutters really ought to be very high precision devices, but range in price from a few pounds (good for cutting thin cord and non-wire items) up to £40+ (for a good pair of Lindstrom). They give – as the name suggests – a ‘Flush’ cut with a square end to whatever you cut. However, Flush Cutting puts a lot of strain on the blade and cheaper cutters will wear extremely quickly. And – if you try to cut something hard – the tips may even shatter or end up chipped. Only use Flush Cutters when you really need too. We mainly use them for cutting Beading Wire when they are ideal for cutting right up close to a finding. We do not recommend using them for findings apart from one-off task. ‘V’ shaped and ‘semi-flush’ cutters are better for cutting thicker wire and as the name suggests, they cut the wire leaving a V shape (or arrow!) They can be purchased in different sized blades, with the Lindstrom ‘semi-flush’ going down to very small sizes. This type of cutter is more general purpose and are great for cutting findings. Remember – the longer the handles, the less purchase is required when cutting. The more pressure you excert on the blades though, the shorter the cutting life. The ‘Beadstrom’ cutters illustrated have a unique feature to reduce wear and maintain a longer life. They have a screw on the side of the cutter – you wind this in such that when the blades are just touching, the screw touches the opposite side of the handle. This then prevent over-pressurising the blades if you squeeze to hard – a great idea. A note on Memory Wire Shears. We often hear tales of woe when Beaders have used their favourite cutters to cut Memory Wire – please learn from their mistakes – if you need to cut Memory wire, use special Memory Wire Cutters or Shears! These are designed not to cut wire, but to Shear or Snap the wire. Yes, I know they are another £10 or so – but cheaper than having to buy yet another pair of cutters. Round Nosed Pliers We have seen some appalling Round Nosed pliers! Beware those that seem incredibly cheap….Round Nosed pliers come in different sized cones. The closer to the fulcrum point, the larger the diameter. Pliers made by Beading Manufacturers (i.e. Beadsmith, Beadalon) tend to be designed for Jewellery making and are recommended. Note that some pliers touch all of the way along the cones – these are best for very thin wire. Others have a slight gap that gets larger towards the fulcrum point. I would recommend the latter – so long as when you close the jaws, you can still firmly grip your wire all the way along the cones. I have seen many cheap pairs that are only any use at the tips – a waste of money. Once again, the Beadstrom make have the additional lead screw to prevent over-tightening the jawsA special word on two different types of Round Nosed Pliers. Beadalon make pliers that on one jaw have 3 different diameters, whilst the scond Jaw is concave. These pliers are great for making consistent sized wire loops. A ‘Flat-Round’ Pair of pliers is also available – cone shaped jaw one side and a flat jaw the other. Both of these pliers are useful if you do a lot of wireworking. Crimp Tool Once you have used a (decent) pair of Crimp pliers, you will wonder how you ever did without them! Buy from a reputable manufacturer, who will match the size of the pliers to a specific size of Crimp. Beware of those crimp tools that have a sharp point in the aperture. This quickly wears (after it has stuck to the crimp!) Some cheaper varieties (which I admit, I did sell until I knew better, and now sell because people do not believe you get what you pay for) have too large an aperture and will not crimp your crimp beads unless they are very large. Here is a very useful tip when buying crimp pliers. The orginal design for crimping pliers was registered with a patent. If you buy a reputable pair of crimp pliers, check and see that the patent number is stamped upon one of the inner jaws! If it is not there…. Beadalon produce good guidance in their on-line catalogue on crimp beads, tubes and crimp tools. If you really like quality, go for crimp tubes and the correct sized plier. (they come in 3 different sizes) ****Please see our guide to Crimps & Crimping for more on Crimp Tools and Crimping**** Flat Bladed, Smooth faced pliers Smooth faced is the operative word here! Use these pliers for holding flat surfaces whilst working the wire – good for use with Jump rings and for flattening out finding wires. Make sure your pliers are not too large – but strong enough to be able to bend and flatten wire without bending the pliers (as will happen with chea Nylon & Plastic Jawed Pliers If you are using a lot of soft metal (i.e. Gold!) or easily makred wire and want to hold it firm, then these are likely to be worth the investment. Good ones (such as those made by Beadalon) have replacement jaws available. Cheaper plastic jawed pliers may be worthwhile trying, but are not as good.

Manufacturing Process and Quality control Posted on April 25, 2012 Our Surgical Instruments Manufacturing Process and Quality control SURGICAL/DENTAL INSTRUMENTS MANUFACTURING STEPS 1. Steel The quality of steel is very important in the production of quality instruments. The best you select the best you produce. In order to ensure the finest of quality steel, we have imported or best quality local steel as required by valued customers. 2. Forging Forging is a process of cutting shaped raw instruments with the help of dyes and hammers. Here, the skilled hands give life to the metal and give it the rudimentary shape that will go through series of complicated processes. 3. Forging Inspection At this stage, forged tools are checked to ensure no piece contains any cracks or is reshaped beyond acceptable limits. Checking the quality of raw instruments for: - a. Shape fault b. Broken 4. Machining In this process forging is cut or shaped by machines i.e. cutting sharp edges and raw material in the shape. Here instruments are given their shape through grinding and hammers. For this purpose, extremely skilled labor is required and this process is carried out by instrument specialists only. 5. Milling Drilling of holes in the instruments where required for screws. Different kids of screwing machines are used and instruments are made pairs here. Instruments with even the slightest difference in whole positions will suffer otherwise. 6. Inspection At this stage, all the instruments are inspected not only for machining and milling, but for every process they’ve been through. It’s the stage where only best instruments are selected and instruments with tiny holes and manufacturing faults are again sorted out. 7. Filling At this stage the steel is not too hard so filling is used to shape the instruments in the exact shape they are required to be. The workers match the shape exactly with the samples provided at this stage. So the instruments get most of their shapes at this stage. 8. Filling Inspection After filling the inspection is made and measurements and shapes are checked according to samples. 9. Binding and Temper At this step the instruments are bound in groups of 12 pieces. Then they put them in temper machine, which is filled with a particular material. Here instruments are tempered and its ensured that every instrument get equal heat and treatment so a consistent quality would achieve. 10. Snaffing Fitting For scissors and forceps they are in two pieces so they are joined in this process with screw. Forceps (Tweezers) are joined before and their joint is leveled with a machine by burning the raw material on the joint. Plant or Heat Treatment In this process the instruments are dipped in a material by hanging for five minutes to harden the material. 12. Polishing Instruments are polished at this stage. Ultrasonic Cleaning In this process the instruments are dipped in two materials for cleaning the polish raw thing on it. 1 min. for first material and then for half min. for other material. Ultrasonic cleaning cleans any polishing material stuck and leaves the instrument crystal clear. 15. Lubrication All the instruments involving screws are lubricated at this step. Lubricating the instruments moveable portions facilitates the instrument movement. 16. Tuck checking In this process workers check the cuts and all other things just by viewing the instruments individually. 17. Etching Putting each instrument on stamp pad and burning process to put stamp on each instrument. This stamping procedure is done through electronic etching machines that make the stamp reliable and even sustainable under high boiling temperatures when instruments are sterilized. 18. Cleaning and Checking Instruments are cleaned and checked again one by one. Again it’s the checking for operation, measurements, polish and usability. 19. Q. Description: This invention relates to a surgical scissors and more particularly to a surgical scissors for use with a hand-held surgical device for use in endoscopic and laparoscopic procedures. Surgical scissors heretofore have been provided, and in particular surgical scissors have been provided for use in laparoscopic surgery. However, it has been found that such scissors are very delicate and often are unable to withstand the rigors of surgery for any period of time. There is, therefore, a need for a new and improved surgical scissors to overcome these disadvantages. In general, it is an object of the present invention to provide a surgical scissors which is robust, sharp and cuts very well. Another object of the invention is to provide a surgical scissors of the above character which can be utilized with a hand-held surgical device in endoscopic and laparoscopic procedures. Additional objects and features of the invention will appear from the following description in which the preferred embodiments are set forth in detail in conjunction with the accompanying drawings. A cylindrical pin 31 extends transversely of the inner tubular member 26 and extends through aligned parallel slots 32 provided in the tubular member 26. The pin 31 is seated in holes 33 provided in the outer tubular member 27. The pin 31 is retained therein by a plastic shrink tube 34. A scissors mechanism 41 is mounted on the distal extremity 22 and consists of a nose 42 which is formed of two parts 42a and 42b. The nose parts 42a and 42b are provided with spaced apart, annular recesses 43 and 44, and are retained within the distal extremity of the scissors 11 by having portions 26a and 26b of the inner tubular member 26 crimped therein, as shown particularly in FIGS. 3 and 4. The scissors mechanism 41 consists of first and second blades 46 and 47 having straight cutting edges 48 and 49. Means is provided for pivotally interconnecting the first and second blades 46 and 47 to permit pivotal movement between open and closed positions and for mounting the same in the nose 42 and consists of a pivot screw 51 could also be a rivet. The pivot screw 51 has its head 52 recessed within a hole 53 provided in the nose part 42a and has its other end threaded into the nose part 42b. As shown in FIG. 3, the blades 46 and 47 are curved slightly at their outer extremities in a direction away from the axis of the tubular member 26 and lie generally parallel to each other. First and second linkage arms 56 and 57 are provided. Means is provided for pivotally connecting one or the first end of the linkage arm 56 to the first blade 46 and consists of a pin 58. Means is also provided for connecting one or the first end of the linkage rod 57 to the blade 47 and consists of a pin 59. The surgical scissors 11 is provided with a push-pull rod 61 mounted within the inner tubular member 26 for rectilinear movement therein. It is provided with a distal extremity 62 which is slidably mounted in a bore 63 provided in the nose 42. Means is provided for pivotally connecting the distal extremity 62 of the push-pull rod 61 to the other or second ends of the linkage arms 56 and 57 and consists of a pin 66. The proximal extremity 67 of the push-pull rod 61 is threaded, as shown, and is threaded into a cylindrical member 68 (see FIG. 2) which is provided with a screwdriver receiving notch 69 to permit the cylindrical member 68 to be threaded onto the proximal extremity 67 of the push-pull rod 61. The cylindrical member 68 is pivotally mounted on the pin 31 hereinbefore described. Operation and use of the surgical scissors may now be briefly described as follows. Let is be assumed that it is desired to perform a cutting action in connection with an endoscopic or laparoscopic procedure. Let it also be assumed that the surgical scissors 11 has been placed in the hand-held device 12. Operation of the trigger bar 14 will cause opening and closing of the scissor blades 46 and 47 between the open and closed positions as shown in FIGS. 2 and 4. The operation of the trigger bar causes rectilinear movement of the push-pull rod 61 in the manner described in co-pending application Ser. No. 07/806,666 filed Dec. 13, 1991. The linkage arms 56 and 57 are configured in such a manner so that as the push-pull rod 61 is pushed forwardly toward the distal extremity, the toggle-type mechanism which is created by the linkage arms 56 and 57 is moved to a substantially vertical orientation as shown in FIG. 4 to cause the blades 46 and 47 to move towards the closed position. By utilizing such a toggle-type mechanism, it is possible to achieve an optimum toggle mechanical advantage to create the greatest cutting force as the blades approach the closed position. The finest resolution of the scissors 11 is achieved as the toggle mechanism reaches a substantially vertical position and as the cutting blades 46 and 47 come to a closed position. As the optimum mechanical action is being achieved, the push-pull rod as it nears the end of its travel is travelling the greatest amount of distance for the least amount of scissor blade travel. Since the optimum mechanical advantage is achieved near the closed position of the scissor blades 46 and 47, the physician or surgeon utilizing the scissors achieves an “optimum feel” in a tactile sense while operating the trigger bar 14. This makes it possible for the physician or surgeon to readily perform progressive snipping of tissue with the distal extremities of the blades 46 and 47. In this way, the surgeon can progressively snip through tissue with great precision and with a precise cutting action. The scissors of the present invention makes this advantageous because the best resolution of the scissors is up near the tip. From the foregoing, it can be seen that there has been provided a surgical scissors which performs very well in the hands of the surgeon. Its cutting action is smooth and precise. In addition, the scissors is robust so that it can withstand repeated use while still performing precision cutting or snipping. The cutting blades 46 and 47 are provided with cutting edges which remain sharp. The surgical scissors is of a type which can be utilized with hand-held devices for use in endoscopic and laparoscopic procedures.
